Have you ever applied for a mortgage or auto loan only to be bombarded with calls and emails from competing lenders within days – or even hours? This frustrating experience isn't a coincidence. You've encountered "trigger leads," a practice that affects millions of loan applicants each year.
What Are Trigger Leads?
When you apply for a loan, the lender pulls your credit report to evaluate your creditworthiness. This credit inquiry creates a "trigger" that credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) can package and sell to other lenders as a marketing lead. These companies know you're in the market for a loan, making you a prime target for their competitive offers. Trigger leads include information such as:
- Your name and contact information
- The type of loan you applied for
- Your approximate credit score range
- The date of your credit inquiry
While competing offers might occasionally benefit consumers, many people find these unsolicited contacts intrusive and confusing. In some cases, less reputable companies may use trigger leads deceptively by pretending to be affiliated with your original application.
If you want to reduce the amount of spam and offers you receive after applying for a loan, be sure to take these steps beforehand.
Protecting Yourself from Trigger Leads
Before applying for a loan, consider these steps:
Opt Out of Prescreened Offers
The most effective way to prevent trigger leads is to opt out of prescreened credit and insurance offers before applying for a loan. You can do this by:
- Visiting OptOutPrescreen.com, the official Consumer Credit Reporting Industry website
- Calling 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688)
- Choosing either a 5-year opt-out period or permanent opt-out (permanent opt-out requires a signed form)
This opt-out process prevents the credit bureaus from selling your name for prescreened offers, including trigger leads. However, note that it may take up to five business days for the opt-out to take effect.
Register with the Do Not Call Registry
Adding your phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry won't directly stop trigger leads, but it can reduce the number of calls you receive:
- Register online at DoNotCall.gov
- Call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to register
While trigger leads are a common industry practice, you can protect your privacy during the loan process by taking these simple steps before applying. Remember that your original lender – the one you chose to apply with – remains your most reliable source of information throughout your loan journey. When in doubt, reach out directly to your loan officer with any questions or concerns.
